JSS Teachers' Strike as KCSE Top Performers Are Revealed
Learning in Junior Secondary Schools is expected to be disrupted from next week after intern teachers announced weekly strikes following the government's decision to delay their absorption on a permanent and pensionable basis.
The 20,000 teachers were expected to be transitioned to permanent terms at the beginning of this year.
However, the government opted to extend the contracts of the interns to January 2027 because the money needed to hire them had not been included in the 2025/2026 budget.
As a result, the Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA) announced weekly strikes that will take place every Tuesday.
The interns noted that they had been demoralised, given that they take home Ksh20,000 per month.
Notably, the interns will be joined by the over 46,000 colleagues who are already employed permanently.
"Our demand is for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to implement the transition from internship to permanent and pensionable employment," KEJUSTA chair James Odhiambo stated.
"We want to remind the government, the Teachers Service Commission, and, most importantly, the President, to be truthful. The State must stop playing politics with education."
Meanwhile, Education PS Julius Bitok expressed that the extension of the internships was also informed by the government’s policy, which requires the interns to serve for two years before being transitioned to a permanent basis.
Here is a quick recap of the 2025 KCSE Results
On Friday, Education CS Julius Ogamba released the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results for 993,226 candidates.
A total of 1,932 candidates attained the top A (plain) grade, a slight increase from 1,693 candidates recorded in 2024.
The number of candidates who qualified for direct university entry by scoring C+ and above rose to 270,715, up from 246,391 the previous year. Similarly, candidates scoring C– and above increased to 507,131, compared to 476,889 in 2024.
Those who attained a pass grade of D+ and above also rose to 634,082, from 605,774 in the previous year.
